Pop Christian music, also referred to as inspirational music or Contemporary Christian music (CCM) is a genre of pop music in which the lyrics contain messages or themes of Christian faith. This music first started gaining considerable notice in the late 60s and early 70s, during the Jesus revival movement.
The pop Christian music industry today is quite large, and has a devoted section in Billboard Magazine's "Top Christian Albums" and "Hot Christian Songs" charts, among several other notable top song and album listings. Songs by artists belonging to the pop Christian music genre regularly make the Top 40 lists and mainstream radio airplay.
In fact, pop Christian music is so popular, it regularly outsells other genres such as classical music, Latin, jazz, and New Age. The strong musical arrangements with pop beats and elements of infused rock, along with the uplifting messages and themes appeal not just to Christians, but to anyone who can appreciate good, solid music with a valuable message. This is stark contrast to rock music that normally contains themes associated with drugs, sex, violence, and other notions not condoned by the Christian faith.
