Popular Christian music, also referred to as Contemporary Christian music (CCM) or inspirational music, is a genre of pop music in which the lyrics are infused with valuable messages or themes of Christian faith. Popular Christian music first started emerging into the mainstream in the late 60s and early 70s, mainly as a result of the large Jesus revival movement.
The popular Christian music industry today is extremely large, and Billboard Magazine maintains "Top Christian Albums" and "Hot Christian Songs" charts, as do several other notable magazines and music industry resources. Songs by artists belonging to the Christian music genre can be found regularly on Top 40 lists and featured in mainstream radio airplay.
In fact, popular Christian music regularly outsells other genres such as classical music, Latin, jazz, and New Age. The genre is in stark contrast to rock music that normally contains themes associated with drugs, sex, violence, and other notions not condoned by the Christian faith. The strong musical arrangements with pop beats and elements of rock, along with the uplifting messages and themes, appeals to anyone who can appreciate good, solid music with a valuable message.
