The quality of Christian hip hop music has steadily increased over the years. With the help of inexpensive technology, artists and producers have access to many of the same tools used by mainstream artists. It was only a few years ago that the quality of professionally produced Christian hip hop was inferior to secular hip hip. Music production consisted of beats that did not keep up with the times. It was not until around 2004 – 2005 that the quality of Christian hip hop music production began to make a come back.

When you listen to Christian hip hop prior to 2003, you can easily here the difference in the music production. It appeared that Christian producers were years behind current trends and styles. This is the primary reason why the music was barely surviving. It was not necessarily because of the content. Hip hop is a beat driven genre. Lyrics are not the first thing that catches the listeners ear. If the beat is sub-par, listeners will rarely notice the lyrics before skipping to another track or switching to another song. This is why is so important to start with a catchy beat to grab the listeners attention.

In secular hip hop, the lyrics of a song do not have to be well written. It is not the substance of the lyrics that keeps the listener's attention. However, in Christian hip hop, the lyrics must be well written concepts that focus on Christianity. If the lyrics are not focused on Christian perspectives, many listeners will quickly dismiss the song and the artist. The key to creating a good Christian hip hop song is to be led by the Holy Spirit. This does not guarantee the songs monetary success, because this is not the focus of the genre and many times an artists will never know if a song has successfully reached it's listeners.
